The youngest person with diabetes in Fiji is recorded to be 8 years old.
Medical Officer in Charge for the Diabetes Hub Dr Lisi Finiasi says this type of diabetes is caused by a person’s lifestyle.
Dr Finiasi says the main cause of diabetes is the type of food people consume and how they live their life.
She adds that diabetes has increased by 10% from 2002 to 2011.
Dr Finiasi says that a 1 month old baby was recorded as the youngest person to have type 1 diabetes.
She adds that 1 in 3 adults has diabetes in the country and there are 2 amputations in a day.
The Diabetes Hub say that they have recorded a drop in the number of amputations from 1.9 to 0.9 per thousand.
The Hub managed to save 900 amputations from 2009 to 2013.
Dr Finiasi says people can control diabetes by living a healthy life.
