Fijians can now work for up to 3 years in Australia after Fiji’s inclusion in the Pacific Labour Scheme.
Under the Seasonal Worker Programme, Fijians were allowed to work 9 months in Australia.
This is after a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the High Commissioner of Fiji to Australia Luke Daunivalu and the Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs Marise Payne.
The Scheme will boost opportunities for semi and low‑skilled Fijians to seek employment in tourism, age‑care and agricultural sectors.
Employment Minister Parveen Bala says this will help reduce the unemployment rate to below 4% by 2021.
Fiji joins countries such as Kiribati, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Timor‑Leste, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu in the Scheme.
Fijians wishing to participate in the Scheme are encouraged to contact the Ministry of Employment, Industrial Relations and Productivity on the eligibility criteria and other requirements.
