Fiji’s ginger is of high quality with a unique flavour and low plant fiber and the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji is confident that Australia has high interest in the product.
Executive Chairman, Xavier Khan said the increase in exports is potentially due to Fiji gaining access into the Australian fresh ginger market in 2012.
Khan said this has provided Fiji with a great opportunity to further broaden its economic base apart from providing more employment opportunities for farmers in the country.
He added that Fiji’s ginger is among the best in the world and currently, exports approximately 1,200 tonnes of immature ginger and 400 tonnes of mature ginger internationally.
He added that with collaboration from neighbouring countries Fiji can greatly expand its export market.
