Fiji’s electricity demand has increased by 18% from 794 million units at the end of December 2014 to 937 million units at the end of December 2018.
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Jone Usamate revealed this in his ministerial speech in parliament where he also highlighted that currently the total number of customer accounts with Energy Fiji Limited has increased by 14% from 2015 to 2019.
Usamate says as at January 2019, there are more than 171,000 domestic accounts with EFL and almost 19,000 commercial and industrial accounts.
He told the parliament that demand for power is increasing which is a global trend.
Usamate told parliamentarians it is critical that major half life refurbishment works be carried out to ensure that the Monasavu Hydro Scheme continues to perform to its optimal level for the next 25 to 30 years.
He says the Bainimarama and FijiFirst governments have been proactive about this and they commenced the Monasavu half life refurbishment in 2013.
