Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says Fiji will ratify the core human rights instruments in the near future.
Bainimarama announced this while speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in New York earlier today.
He says as Fiji participates in the Human Rights Council, it finds yet again that the voice and the unique concerns of the Pacific small island developing states have trouble being heard.
Bainimarama says this includes issues like climate change.
He says major developed nations must do more to reduce carbon emissions and the emergency is now.
Meanwhile Bainimarama says Fiji required no push from anyone to have elections as it was always the country’s intention to have truly democratic elections.
He says he is happy that those who were criticising Fiji are now engaging with the government.
Bainimarama also says the Pacific Small Island Developing States have never had the privilege of holding the General Assembly Presidency.
They have accordingly put forward to the Asia‑Pacific Group the name of Fiji’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Peter Thomson for the position.
He called for the other member countries to support the nomination.
