A first consignment of half a tonne of locally produced fresh mature ginger has been sent to Australia.
Sai Yee Foods Industries Limited’s, Director Ken Yee confirmed the first consignment of 500 kg fresh ginger landed safely in Australia and has been cleared.
Yee said Fiji’s ginger can now be exported to Australia.
Last month the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry issued the import condition for fresh ginger from Fiji, officially giving the green light to the Australian ginger importers to begin trade with Fiji.
Fiji currently exports 1,500 tonnes of processed ginger worth more than $6 million annually mainly to New Zealand, Canada and the United States for direct retail market.
The supply of Fijian made ginger to the Australian market is greatly expected to boost export earnings in the country.
