Fiji is spending more Per Capita than any other country in the world on Legal Aid.

This was revealed by visiting South African Professor David Mason who is in the country for a workshop on the responsibilities of Police during an arrest and the importance of Legal Aid.

Mason says Fiji spends US$3 which is nearly twice on what South Africa was spending per capita on Legal Aid.

Mason says South Africa has a very sophisticated Legal Aid scheme and they spend about $1.70 US per capita to every person in South Africa.

He adds that the similarity between South Africa and Fiji in Capita is that South Africa is funded by the state while Fiji is funded by the government.

Mason says that for most countries the budget for Legal Aid is roughly 10 to 15 percent of what the DPP gets but Fiji gets 80 percent over the DPP and this is setting a good example for other developing countries.

Mason says that he hopes Fiji is included with the rest of the world in future conferences in terms of Legal Aid.
