Fiji has received $7.85 million to implement the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation Plus programme to reduce greenhouse gases.

The funding comes in the form of the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation Plus Readiness Grant for Fiji through the World Bank which was launched by the President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau.

Speaking to stakeholders which includes the international agencies assisting Fiji in this efforts Ratu Epeli said the programme is a climate change initiative that Fiji is committed to and implemented through the Forestry Department.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Fisheries and Forest’s Permanent Secretary Inoke Wainiqolo says forest degradation contributes 20% towards greenhouse gases and the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation Plus programme will play a significant role in the mitigation of greenhouse gases.
