Fiji loses more than 2%of its coral reefs per year.
This was highlighted by the Minister for Fisheries Semi Koroilavesau at the Second National Multi-Stakeholders Consultation on Oceans.
Koroilavesau says the fisheries industry and aquaculture contribute to more than $136 million towards Fiji’s GDP.
He adds more than half of Fiji’s population that live along the coast heavily depend on subsistence fishing.
Today’s discussions will focus on the formulation of Fiji’s national oceans policy framework ahead of the UN Oceans Conference, which Fiji will Co-President the meeting next month.
