Fiji is looking forward to further improving its relations in the sugar sector with the International Sugar Organization Council.
While speaking at the 47th session of the ISO Council in Guatemala, Acting Permanent Secretary for Sugar Parmesh Chand said Fiji looks forward to continuing collaboration with ISO and likeminded member countries in all facets of the sugarcane industry as a small developing country with lack of economies of scale in the industry.
Chand said they stand to benefit by leveraging from well-established programmes, facilities and technology existing in our fellow member countries and vice-versa.
He said this will help them overcome the usual constraints which small producers such as Fiji face.
Chand added that the estimate for this season is over 2.08 million tonnes of cane to be crushed producing an estimated 232,000 tonnes of sugar.
Last year, 1.83 million tonnes of cane were crushed producing 226,368 tonnes of sugar.
