Small Island Developing States need significant investment and assistance from international communities in climate change adaption, resilience and mitigation measures in particular capacity building and financing.
This was highlighted by the Solicitor‑General and Permanent Secretary for Civil Aviation, Sharvada Sharma while delivering his remarks at the “Capacity Building Seminar on Low Emissions Aviation Measures” at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi.
Sharma says the Pacific region and in particular Fiji has played an important role in the 2017 United Nations Climate Change Conference by presiding over COP23, to be a global voice calling on the international community to commit to more ambitious targets to curb the carbon emission that are warming our planet, and Fiji continues to play this important role.
The Permanent Secretary highlighted on the importance of Fiji and other small island developing nations in committing to climate change mitigation measures and reducing emission levels while adapting to climate change.
Sharma says aviation is undoubtedly one of the fastest growing contributors of carbon emissions and there is a need to play our part and strive collectively to achieve the ambitious targets that Fiji has agreed to in the International Civil Aviation Organization 39th Assembly.
The seminar included delegates from the Pacific Island States, Australia, Korea, Singapore, Jamaica as well as regional and international organisations.
The two‑day seminar will be used to raise awareness on various funding mechanisms available to small island developing states in implementing aviation emission measures.
