Fijian businesses have formally joined forces with the Government, the UN and civil society organisations to establish the Fiji Business Disaster Resilience Council.
This has been revealed in a Connecting Business session in the World Humanitarian Summit by Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama in Istanbul, Turkey.
Bainimarama said the council’s role is to assist businesses affected by disaster and strengthen private sector engagement in the country’s collective response.
He said they are especially looking to the private sector to introduce new technologies to deal with climate change.
Bainimarama said the council is being showcased at the Summit as part of the Connecting Business Initiative.
He has commended it to other leaders as a model that can be replicated in any country prone to natural disasters.
The Prime Minister said governments cannot do everything, nor do they have a monopoly on wisdom or efficiency.
He said the Fijian Government regards the private sector as a vital partner in national development.
Bainimarama also thanked the businesses who assisted the government after Cyclone Winston.
He said their wonderful contribution helped Fiji get back on its feet.
