The Fiji Airways Men’s National 7s team bounced back in style to keep their World Sevens Series title hopes alive after defeating New Zealand 26‑17 in their last pool match to set up a quarter-final clash against England in the Paris 7s.
It was a must win game for Fiji and they delivered accordingly with tries to Kalione Nasoko, Sevuloni Mocenacagi and Vatemo Ravouvou in the first‑half to take them to a 19‑5 lead at half time.
New Zealand’s first try was scored by Scott Curry.
Fiji held on with their defensive structure and scored a try despite playing with six players when Eroni Sau was yellow carded for a high tackle.
Captain Jerry Tuwai scored the last try from a set piece move to put Fiji in a comfortable lead while New Zealand scored two late tries from Salesi Rayasi and Scott Curry.
The national side had earlier defeated Samoa 35-12 before losing to Kenya 22-19 in their second pool game.
The national side will meet England at 8.13 tonight in the first cup quarter‑finals.
In the others quarters, Ireland will take on Canada, USA will face New Zealand while South Africa will take on Spain.
The semifinals will be held at 12.03am tomorrow while the final will be played at 4.54am tomorrow.
