Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has reiterated Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama’s sentiment that Fiji and Australia are more than neighbors.
While speaking at the University of the South Pacific, Morrison highlighted that Fiji and Australia are family, they are a vuvale adding that this principle of vuvale or family is something Australia and Fiji share deeply.
Morrison also highlighted that he has seen first-hand the enormous potential here in Fiji over a long period of time and he acknowledges the vibrancy of Fiji’s economy and the adverse and dynamic tourism sector.
The Australian Prime Minister also took the time to acknowledge the brave men and women who serve alongside Australians as part of their defence forces.
Morrison also acknowledged three Fiji born Australian Navy personnel, Apaitia Matalau, Tevita Vula and Apete Turova who travelled to Fiji with the Australian Navy on board, the HMNS Canberra relief operation team assigned to help in Koro Island after the devastation of Cyclone Winston.
He says that there are also global challenges confronting us including climate change and that Australia stands with Fiji as we look to those challenges together.
The Australian Prime Minister also highlighted that Australia has committed $300 million in climate and resilience support for the Pacific and in Fiji, Australia has spent $30 million on the climate related events in the last 2 years and something he has assured will continue.
