It is about time that we start scaling up our efforts of planting and preserving forests to help conserve our environment for the future.
Conservator Forests Eliki Senivasa highlighted this while speaking at the Understanding the Fiji National REDD Plus Programme Workshop.
Senivasa says that forests are a key component of climate change and it is important because in a global context forests are an easier and cheaper way of addressing climate change.
REDD Plus Communications & Knowledge Management Specialist, Reama Naco says that trees are removed to build homes, to build walkways, roads, infrastructure and for agriculture purposes to plant and grow food.
However she also highlighted that if there is logging, REDD Plus encourages sustainable logging practices.
Naco says that REDD Plus also encourages replanting of land areas that have been left barren like the talasiga or grassland areas.
REDD Plus is a national programme that is very diverse and addresses climate change with the use of forests and land use.
Meanwhile, 30 participants from 4 government ministries and the statutory body TLTB are a part of the 2 day workshop that will come to an end tomorrow at the Holiday Inn.
