The Fiji Mountaineering and Climbing Association is organising the "2019 Walkathon Round Viti Levu” from 10th to 20th August.
The purpose of the walkathon is to raise awareness on non‑communicable diseases in Fiji, where Ministry of Health will organise "Healthy Town Drives" at 17 urban venues, "Healthy Village Drives" at 73 villages near Queens and Kings Highway and also blood donation drives.
President Jioji Konrote is also supporting the walkathon.
In a support message for the walkathon, Konrote says the walkathon is a timely social initiative for Fiji with the aim to educate, engage and motivate Fijians against the severity of NCDs in Fiji.
He says the theme of “Walk against NCDs” is significantly appropriate given the current prevalence of NCD related ailments and deaths in our society.
Konrote adds in Fiji, one of the major risks to the health and longevity of our population is the rising crisis of non‑ communicable diseases adding in recent decades, NCD has become the biggest killer in Fiji, causing thousands of deaths every year – many of those deaths premature – and affecting the lives of many more.
