The Fiji Corrections Service has confirmed that they have amicably solved an attempted hunger strike by remand prisoners at the Lautoka Remand Centre.
In a statement, the Fiji Corrections Service has stated that the attempted hunger strike was a result of a snap search by Corrections staff at the Remand Centre resulting in the confiscation of contraband items which included mobile phones and drugs.
It was also confirmed that the confiscation of drugs has been reported to the Police for their appropriate action.
The Fiji Corrections Service says all claims of ill-treatment by the inmates are false and baseless.
