A 43-year-old farmer from the Eastern Division has been sentenced to seven years six months imprisonment for raping his sister-in-law three years ago.
The incident happened in the early hours of the morning when the 24-year-old victim was sleeping with her three children at her home.
While sentencing him, Suva High Court Judge Justice Prabhaharan Kumararatnam said the act done to the victim by the accused person took away the victim’s dignity in the society.
He added that he betrayed the bond between a brother-in-law and a sister-in-law.
The Judge said the man has shattered the close ties of his family, the victim’s family and their relatives.
He said the man has instilled a sense of fear into the victim which may affect her whole life.
He will be liable for parole after spending four and a half years behind bars.
