A 27-year-old farmer is in Police custody in the Sigatoka Police Station after he allegedly assaulted a female and male Police officer last night.

Police Chief of Operations ACP Rusiate Tudravu says the incident occurred at 10pm at the Naidovi School grounds in Sigatoka while the two officers were trying to disperse a group of youths that were drinking at the school ground.

ACP Tudravu says the two officers were on patrol when they saw the group drinking and when they were warned to leave it is alleged that the farmer verbally abused the officers before he assaulted the male officer.

He says the suspect resisted arrest and in the process of arresting the suspect, it is alleged he injured both officers.

ACP Tudravu says the two officers sustained minor injuries and received treatment.

He says they are working tirelessly to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable festive season and all they ask in return is cooperation and respect for police officers who are merely doing their work.
