400 families in the Nanuku and Veidogo informal settlements in Vatuwaqa now have access to reliable and affordable electricity.

This was made possible by the New Zealand Aid Programme which provided funding of $FJD700,000 through the Climate Change Division for the purchase and distribution of solar powered home electrification kits.

Bharti Reddy who has been living in Nanuku settlement for the last 24 years says they had faced a lot of difficulties without electricity.

A total of 700 homes in informal settlements in Suva and the Western Division have benefitted from this program.

These kits include a 100 watt solar panel, 5 LED light strips with cables, a control unit with battery and inverter, a fan and 2 outlet plugs for various household appliances.

New Zealand High Commissioner to Fiji, Jonathan Curr said that the New Zealand government was pleased to work with the Government of Fiji on this climate change project which promoted the use of clean renewable energy.
