Issues about better roads, supply of planting materials, availability of market for produce and availability of farm machineries were raised by farmers in Levuka during the Assistant Minister for Agriculture’s visit to the island.
While touring the island, the Assistant Minister for Agriculture Viam Pillay says agricultural programs in the province are aimed at improving the current food and income security of the rural population by developing cropping programs which have been distributed to all villages.
The main crops grown in the province are dalo, yaqona and coconuts with Voivoi becoming increasingly important source of income for some of the islanders.
Lomaiviti Province consists of seven main islands with a total rural population of over 21,479 people, whose livelihood directly depends on agriculture as the main source of employment and income.
The Assistant Minister Pillay will continue with similar visits to the Northern Division this week.
