The Fiji Women’s Rights Movement believes that justice is not served in the Employment Relations Bill if employers and trade unions are not allowed legal presentation.
While making their submission to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Justice, Law and Human Rights, FWRM’s Team Leader Gender and Transitional Justice Michelle Reddy said the Bill allows essential services and industries a separate access to the Arbitration Court, and there is a very narrow scope for the right to access justice.
Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Justice, Law and Human Rights Ashneel Sudhakar agreed that this could be problematic for the employers and the trade union officers and the Committee will look into the amendment.
Reddy has also recommended that the Committee consider including a NGO representative on the Employment Relations Advisory Board.
Chairman Sudhakar said the Committee will consider the recommendation.
