The Fiji Trades Union Congress will speak to the Suva City Council and Local Government Ministry after the SCC informed the FTUC that they cannot get Sukuna Park for a union rally on the 29th of this month because it is zoned as a recreational park.
National Secretary Felix Anthony says applications for a permit have been made to the Fiji Roads Authority, the Suva City Council, Police and the Divisional Commissioner.
Anthony says surprisingly, the Suva City Council has written back to advise that Sukuna Park is now zoned as a recreational park and would therefore not allow a rally unless they seek permission from the Local Government Ministry.
The FTUC National Secretary says this shows the Suva City Council prioritizes recreation ahead of human rights and people’s constitutional rights.
Anthony says they want to have a march and rally to highlight a number of concerns.
When contacted by Fijivillage, Local Government Minister Parveen Bala said that he was unaware of the FTUC rally issue and had to speak to SCC first.
We have tried to speak to SCC CEO Bijay Chand.
He is not answering his phone.
