If we are serious about developing women’s rugby, why we do not have at least an Under 18 girl’s competition running at the same time and at the same venue as the Deans Rugby finals?

Fijivilage has raised this question as many interested female students want to take part in a competition that would have the same crowd level and interest as the Coke Zero Deans competition.

This will also benefit Fiji rugby as a whole knowing that women’s rugby is an Olympic sport and we could also win gold in that competition and also develop our women for the Women’s World Cup 7s and 15s competitions.

When questioned by Fijivillage, the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby Union said that they will be discussing the inclusion of the girls 15s competition in the Coke Zero Deans competition, in their symposium next week.

Executive, Napolioni Silatolu says there has been a tremendous level of interest from the girls during the Deans competition and they will start by including them in them in the Vodafone 7s Championship tomorrow.

The 7s tournament tomorrow will see Ballentine Memorial School, Sacred Heart College, Suva Grammar School and Nuku Secondary School participating in the one day competition.

Silatolu believes that more rugby programs and development of female players in secondary schools will assist the national side, especially the Fijiana.

Meanwhile the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby 7s tournament known as the Vodafone 7s Championship will be held tomorrow at the ANZ Stadium with four zones forming three teams from the U15, 17 and 19 grades.

Vodafone Fiji 7s coach Gareth Baber will also be at the tournament to look for potential national 7s players.
