The Permanent Secretary for Ministry of Sugar, Yogesh Karan says move by the Fiji Sugar Corporation to purchase over a hundred new trucks will cause no harm to anyone.
Permanent Secretary for Ministry of Sugar, Yogesh Karan
When questioned by Fijivillage to explain the rational behind this move as money used to purchase the trucks could have been diverted to other areas to increase cane production, Karan says there was a shortage of cane trucks in the country.
He says cane was left on the fields in the last crushing season as there was a lack of cane trucks.
He adds that no maintenance work has been carried out in the railway systems in the last 25 years and only 20 percent of cane is being transported by rail to the mills.
The FSC had announced recently that it will acquire over a hundred new trucks which will be primarily transporting cane to the sugar mills.
FSC’s CEO Graham Clark says these new trucks will be distributed across all cane sectors and will be managed by their transport department via fleet management solution at cost effective prices.
