Fiji Sugar Corporation has resumed shipment to the Chinese market by recently sending its second consignment of the year.
With increasing demand for Fijian sugar, FSC is optimistic about expanding its Asian customer base.
This is FSC’s first consignment of sugar for the Chinese market after a lapse of many years, with a total of 34,000 tonnes, for which 20,000 was loaded from Labasa’s Malau Port.
According to a government statement, FSC Chief Executive Officer, Graham Clark says there are a lot of exciting opportunities in those markets.
He says China is looking for Fiji sugar with the right quality but this also depends on the price and they need to ensure that they watch the world markets, and if the price is right they hope to negotiate more sales to Asia.
Clark added the last time Fiji exported sugar to China was decades ago, so it has been great to re-enter this market as they believe it will be a growth market for Fiji’s sugar.
FSC has previously shipped 35,000 tonnes of sugar for the United Kingdom and European markets. These include 20,000 tonnes of Fairtrade-certified sugar for Europe and the remaining 15,000 tonnes for the UK.
A total of five shipments are scheduled between this month and March 2019.
