The Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority has rewarded a whistleblower a sum of $14,500 after information provided by the whistleblower led to the successful recovery of more than $145,000 in omitted Value Added Tax and penalties.
FRCA Acting Chief Executive Officer Visvanath Das says a whistleblower that provides information or documents to the authority contributing significantly to the success of the investigation and prosecution by the Authority shall be entitled to a monetary reward of up to 10% of the tax revenue recovered.
The whistleblower provided valuable information to FRCA and it was ascertained that a well‑established Suva business falsified their VAT returns.
Information provided by the whistleblower led the Authority to detect the falsification of VAT from the business’ accounting system software.
FRCA says the whistleblower wishes that his personal identity remain protected under the Authority’s Whistleblowing Policy as he is still to provide valuable information on more tax and customs fraud.
If you have evidence of a business or taxpayer committing tax or customs fraud, or any unprofessional conduct by FRCA officers, you are encouraged to report through FRCA’s 24/7 hotline.
