The Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority is investigating a case of abuse of the tax concession which is being offered to those who make donations for TC Winston relief efforts.

FRCA Acting Chief Executive Officer Visvanath Das says they are investigating an allegation which involved a particular person or group abusing the tax concession.

Das says they cannot reveal further information as the matter is under investigation.

He is warning the public that there are hefty penalties in place for those who may tend to abuse the system.

The government had announced that due to the high volume of interest from overseas organisations and individuals, donors can request duty and VAT exemption directly from the Ministry of Finance.

It had said that items will be approved for an exemption that can provide immediate relief for victims of Tropical Cyclone Winston.

It had also been announced that all donated goods consigned to religious and charitable organizations for relief are free of duty and VAT provided that it is addressed to the Prime Ministers Hurricane Relief and Rehabilitation Fund and approved by National Disaster and Management Office.
