Fiji Roads Authority’s General Manager Central Aram Goes says he cannot confirm whether the two lanes on Princes Road at Dilkusha will be open for two lanes from today, until he gets a feedback from the Geo-Technical engineers.
Goes says he has asked for clarification as they want the two lanes to be opened as soon as possible as they recognise that Princes Road is an extremely important route into Suva City and complements the traffic on Kings Road.
He says the FRA can assure the public that the road is safe for travel in its current single lane status and efforts are underway to make it a two lane road.
Goes says the exact cause of the landslides cannot be confirmed as yet.
Goes adds the FRA met with the Ministry of Forestry to talk about ways they can safely cut trees on the slope in Dilkusha which are a threat to the slope stability and the public should the slope stability move.
He says the load of a large tree can pull a bank down by itself and there is a lot science that has proved that vegetation and roots are good on slope surface but at a certain point, the overhanging nature of that weight of the tree can also be counter productive to the stability.
Goes says they will look at stability and mechanics around what options they have to stabilise the slope in the coming months.
