The Lomaiviti Provincial Council will be sending one of their Environmental Conservation Officers to Nasau Village in Koro next week to relay to the villagers why a diversion was made to Nasoni River.
This comes after concerns were raised by Koro Ecosystem-Based Management Coordinator, Aporosa Kaunisela who on the 3rd of this month filed a complaint with the Lomaiviti Provincial Council saying that the diversion of the river has harmed the ecosystem which is a source of freshwater marine life to the villagers.
The Provincial Council says that they have received the Environment Impact Assessment Report from the Fiji Roads Authority and Conservatiion Officer, Matereti Mateiwai will travel to Nasau to relay it to the villages and the resource owners.
Meanwhile FRA says the diversion of Nasoni River in Nasau is temporary in-order to allow the construction of an Irish bridge.
Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Moore highlighted that the community was consulted prior to the proposed work and the need to carry out the diversion to allow the flow of the work.
Moore says the copies of the Environment Impact Assessment Report is already with the stakeholders including the Lomaiviti Provincial Council and also the Department of Environment.
He adds that as soon as the work is completed they will reinstate the river to what it previously was.
