With the need to have more skilled workers in the Mining and Quarrying industry, the Fiji National University has launched a Certificate IV in Geology, Mining and Quarrying a new programme which will roll out from next year.
Fiji National University Chancellor, Iqbal Janiff says that the programme was formalized in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme.
Meanwhile the Minister for Trade and Tourism, Faiyaz Koya while officiating at FNU’s Graduation ceremony says that the programme was developed to meet the training needs of the mining and quarrying industry in Fiji, given the important role it plays in our local economy.
Koya adds that the increasing interest, development and exploration of Bauxite in Bua and Mineral in Namosi and Naitasiri has called on the demand for more research and education in this field.
He says that the estimated outlook for the demand of Sand and Gravel in Fiji for 2017-2018 stands at $100 million, thus the annual use for sand and gravel for road construction and concrete production is at 1,280,000 tonnes henceforth the price is estimated at about $102 million per year.
