The Fiji National University Students Association Elections which was held at the Labasa, Tamavua, Koronivia and Pasifika Campuses, ended at 8pm last night.
Fijian Elections Office Returning Officer, Mesake Dawai says previous elections were held at different times based on the academic calendar of each campus and this is the first time the Fijian Elections Office has conducted elections for FNU on one day. He says as at 5pm yesterday, the number of votes cast was 550 however the exact figures will be given later today.
Dawai says the counting of votes will take place today for all the campuses. He says the counting of votes for Koronivia, Tamavua and Pasifika will take place at the FNU Derrick Campus starting this hour and should be completed by 2pm.Counting in Labasa will also be done today at the polling station. He says the only minor challenge they faced was that some students were not able to vote as their names were not on the voter list.
Dawai says the voter list was given to them by the FNU and they have worked according to that. He says the Fijian Elections Office will now convene a comprehensive review exercise with student representatives in the FNU to streamline the electoral processes in line with the requirements for each campus to allow for maximum participation.
Dawai says it is necessary that electoral good practices implemented in this election continue to be replicated in future elections.
32 candidates are vying for 15 positions in the election.
