The Fiji Labour Party says they want a reconciliation commission to be set up in the country.
While making their submission at the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence, FLP representative Ben Padarath said they believe this is the only way forward for the country.
Padarath said the reconciliation commission should also involve the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and former Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka as the events of 1987 and 2006 have affected the people of Fiji.
He said mental and physical torture has no place in our society which is why the FLP is in favour of the ratification of the United Nations Convention Against Torture.
Padarath claims that he was also tortured.
Meanwhile the National Federation Party says the intention of government to review and hopefully ratify the United Nations Convention Against Torture is commendable.
The National Council of Women also agrees that it is about time that Fiji ratifies the United Nations Convention Against Torture.
