The Fiji Electricity Authority will be carrying out a major exercise called the Monasavu Hydro-scheme half-life refurbishment programme this weekend.

The exercise will commence at 10pm on Friday and will run until Monday night.

FEA CEO Hasmukh Patel says that the Monasavu Hydro-scheme has been in operation for 34 years and is leaking very badly, thus there is a need to replace it for efficiency purposes.

The FEA will be working on replacing the main inlet valve at the Wailoa Power station and the work is expected to last three days.

During this weekend, the plant will be taken out of operation, meaning no power will be supplied by the Wailoa Power Station which is part of the Monasavu Hydro-scheme.

Patel says that during this period, electricity demand in Viti Levu will be met through the Nadarivatu Hydro-scheme and other fossil fuel power stations throughout Viti Levu.

He says that no power outage should be expected in Viti Levu over the weekend but in the event if the machines that are running have an occasional problem then intermittent power disturbance might occur but FEA will work on reducing the chances of such disturbances.

The new valve cost $3 million.
