The Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation is now planning a forum with Fiji National University to address what they need from Fiji’s labour market.
CEO Nesbitt Hazelman says it is not an issue about how many they want but rather the quality and competency attached to the job seeker for the private sector as there is the additional cost of doing business when the skills brought into the industry are substandard.
He says they are constantly liaising with training providers to ensure they get valuable information of any shortfall on needed skills in both the short and long term.
Hazelman says they are focusing on projected increases in activity within the building and construction industry as the skills needed to adequately cover will be a challenge.
He adds there are a number of skilled foreign workers in Fiji today occupying jobs that should really be taken up by locals.
