The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission has commended the move by government which is expected to benefit thousands of Fijians who purchase products in outlets across the country daily.
This follows the agreement between Government and Association of Banks in Fiji on the initiative that will see consumers no longer charged transaction fees for paying by debit card at outlets that use EFTPOS machines.
CEO Joel Abraham says that people can now shop using debit cards without the burden of added transaction costs adding that this results in more saving for Fijians and their families.
Abraham highlighted that this is the first step for the Fijian economy as we transition towards a cashless economy, which is essential to businesses remaining competitive and accountable in a globalized market.
He has stressed that through its monitoring, they will check which businesses do not have point of sale machines and provide guidance on how they can improve their system.
The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission also applauds the incentive given by the government to pay fifty percent of the cost to purchase EFTPOS machines for small businesses and working to ensure more point of sale machines are used in Fiji.
