There is an estimated 45 new cases of cancer detected in children under 15 years of age every year in Fiji but only 50 percent are present in the health care system.
This was highlighted by the Health Minister Rosy Akbar at the Child Cancer Month and National Paediatric Oncology Policy launch.
Akbar says cancer continues to be the third most common cause of death in Fiji.
She says in the last five years the survival of common childhood cancers in Fiji has more than doubled.
The Minister says the family unit of the Ministry of Health in partnership with WOWS Kids Fiji, Fiji Cancer Society and the National Paediatric Oncology Committee is proud to launch the Childhood Cancer Awareness month and have dedicated the month of August as the means to intensify awareness.
Akbar says the launching of the National Paediatric Oncology Policy is a milestone achievement and a national plan for the care and support for children with cancer.
