The new equipment worth $5.7 million for the Fiji Weather office is expected to help in determining weather conditions more effectively and efficiently.
The office yesterday received the state of the art equipment from the Government of Japan which is part of a four year project with Fiji aimed at promoting international cooperation in the field of disaster risk management.
While receiving the equipment, Minister for Local Government, Housing, Environment, Infrastructure and Transport Parveen Bala says some benefits of the new equipment are the ability to read weather patterns in a much quicker and easier way, timely reporting and improved observation.
Meanwhile, Japanese Ambassador Takuji Hanatani says the equipment will enable the feed of real time weather information.
Hanatani says this will significantly raise Fiji’s capacity for predicting and monitoring natural disasters such as floods, tsunamis, the formation and path of cyclones as well as other weather anomalies more precisely.
