Environmental Emergency declaration lifted

Environmental Emergency declaration lifted

The Environmental Emergency declaration imposed on the Cunningham River following the sewage spillage last year has been lifted.

The areas include the Laqere River, Vatuwaqa River, Suva coastline, Laucala Bay area, Rewa River mouth and including Nukulau Island.

The inter-agency committee monitoring the situation said that the situation is back to normal after extensive laboratory tests on the water quality, sediments and fish conducted over the declaration period.

As part of the ongoing work towards recovering and restoring the river and estuarine ecosystem affected by the sewage spill, areas that were highly affected are still being monitored.
