Minister for Women Mereseini Vuniwaqa says the elimination of violence against women remains one of government’s priorities for this year.
While addressing the women of Cakaudrove, Bua and Macuata in Labasa, Vuniwaqa says everyone must accept that the eradication of violence against women and children will take more than great laws and policies as it requires behavioral and mind set changes.
She says it needs overhauling of the age‑old machinery of traditional barriers which continue to instill gender inequalities in our communities.
Vuniwaqa then said that it requires us to speak the unspeakable because violence against women and children finds comfort in the depth of silence.
She has also called on religious bodies and community-based organizations to make elimination of violence against women and children a hallmark of religious teachings and advocacy.
