The Fijian Elections Office will now be able to properly facilitate political parties campaign financing tracking.

This is after the Elections Office signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Fiji Financial Intelligence Unit.

Supervisor of Elections, Mohammed Saneem says there are various specific rules for campaign financing in Fiji in relation to international funding of political parties and also international funding of other organisations that would like to carry out campaigns.

Saneem says Fiji Financial Intelligence Unit is an important agency that they can partner with and it will allow the Elections Office to deliver its functions under the Electoral Decree and the Political Parties Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures Decree.

Fiji Financial Intelligence Unit’s Director, Razim Buksh says with the increased focus on financial disclosures of political parties and senior public sector officials, the FIU will continue to explore ways and opportunities to scrutinize and verify such disclosures.

He says the idea is also to identify cases of unexplained wealth.
