A 60-year-old woman convicted of obtaining about $40,000 by deception has been jailed for 10 months and 14 days.
Kamlesh Lata Arun obtained money by deception in 2016 from several people to make arrangements for their visas to travel to New Zealand.
In her sentence, Suva Magistrate Deepika Prakash said a strong message must go out to members of the community and people who think like Lata, that anyone who is deceitful and conniving and obtains financial advantage by deception will get no mercy from the court and get immediate custodial sentence.
Magistrate Prakash said she refuses to suspend Lata’s sentence.
It was heard in court that Lata had 33 previous convictions of a similar nature.
