Two men in Labasa have been handed prison sentences after they were convicted of aggravated robbery, murder and attempted arson by the Labasa High Court.
Siuta Seru is found guilty of aggravated robbery, the murder of Babu Ram in Bua and attempted arson while Asaeli Raboleca is found guilty of aggravated robbery.
Seru has been sentenced to 19 years imprisonment before pardon can be considered while Raboleca has been sentenced to 12 years imprisonment.
Raboleca will be eligible for parole after serving 9 years in jail.
On 19th August 2012, Siuta Seru was drinking grog and alcohol with Asaeli Raboleca when they planned to rob Babu Ram’s house. It was suspected that Ram kept small amounts of money in his house which he earned from the sale of tobacco and goats.
On arrival at Ram’s house they covered their faces and surprised Ram who was having his breakfast.
They seized Ram and demanded money from him.
Ram showed them a coin box and they demanded more money.
Seru ransacked the house and found $250 after which he struck Ram on his neck with a knife.
Seru then tried to burn the house to cover up his act.
