People living in the Western, Northern and parts of the Central Division are now being told to prepare themselves as we may be heading into a drought in the next few months.
Permanent Secretary for Works, Transport and Public Utilities, Frances Kean said that the dry spell is driven by a potential El Nino which is the development of warm ocean water temperatures in the Pacific.
Kean said that they have given two updates to cabinet on the current weather situation.
He did not comment on cabinet’s response.
The Nadi Weather Office said rainfall in Fiji is expected to be below average.
In relation to this, Fiji Electricity Authority is also asking the public to use electricity sensibly as the Monasavu Dam water level is at 728.47m which is the lowest level reached for any August since 2008.
