Dental decay is one of the most common chronic childhood diseases in Fiji.
This was highlighted by the Minister for Youth and Sports Laisenia Tuitubou at the National Tooth Brushing Day at the Dilkusha Girls School in Nausori today.
Tuitubou says 88.3% of 6 year olds examined in 2004 had decayed primary teeth.
He says they have set aside this day to reinforce the importance of children’s oral health and promote good tooth-brushing habits.
Tuitubou says there was also evidence of poorer gum conditions as people grow older.
He says it is important that we start these good habits of brushing our teeth twice a day at the youngest age possible.
