Minister for Tourism Premila Kumar says that Denarau Island caters for about 60% of tourist that come to Fiji.

Kumar was responding to a written question that was tabled in parliament last month by SODELPA MP Viliame Gavoka who had asked if an assessment of the infrastructure has been carried out to ensure that it is not under strain and is coping well.

Kumar says that the Denarau Corporation Pte (Limited) has planned development on the island through proper long‑term development plans.

She adds that for the continued development on the island, the corporation last year put in a new ten year infrastructure  strategic plan adding the plans was developed with consultation with the relevant agencies to ensure that their plans for the region takes into account the new needs.

Kumar says the developers also ensure that environmental measures are in place to counter any strains to the environment from the development, such as a ‘Clean Marina Programme’.
