Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho says the overall crime rate for the first half of this year has decreased by 6% while serious crimes also decreased by 5% compared to the same period last year.
Qiliho says there is a 23% reduction in road fatalities.
He says speeding again tops the list as the main cause of fatal accidents where 15 of the 24 lives lost during the first six months were due to speeding.
Qiliho says they managed to record a 2% decrease in both crimes against women and crimes against children.
A total of 10,195 crime cases were recorded during the first six months this year compared to 10,875 cases recorded for the same period last year.
Qiliho says crimes against children are a worrying issue which needs undivided attention.
He highlighted that children as young as three and five months old are falling victim to crimes such as assault which is indeed an outrage.
He says other offences committed against children under the age of five are rape, sexual assault, attempted murder, attempted rape, failure to provide necessities of life, indecently annoying any person and manslaughter arising from a breach of duty.
Qiliho says 39 male offenders were under the age of 17 and some of the offences they were charged with include defilement, abduction, indecent assault, rape and theft.
