Whether you live in Suva, Nasinu, Nadi, Lautoka or Labasa you may have experienced water disruptions because of a burst main in your area in recent months.
Those burst mains are caused by aging infrastructure and pressure fluctuations in pipelines.
Today, the Water Authority of Fiji says a Data Management Program is now being put in place to ensure there is a reduction in those burst mains.
The program will allow the Water Authority of Fiji to know when a water pipe was laid and also the type of water pipe being used.
This work will be an ongoing program for the next 10 to 20 years.
The Authority’s General Manager Special Projects, Taitusi Lacokina believes this will help them know when a water pipe is approaching its design lifespan or has surpassed its design lifespan.
He says they have also reduced the number of areas facing intermittent water supply from 68 to 8.
More than $5 million was allocated for the Urban Water Supply Project last year.
This project is designed to support sustainable growth and development in urban areas by increasing water supply capacity by 29 percent.
There is also the 405 million US dollars Greater Suva Area Water and Waste Water Scheme.
