Director of Public Prosecutions, Christopher Pryde has decided to appeal the sentence imposed on the Australian national and Fijian man convicted in the recent $23 million drug case.
Joseph Abourizk and Mosese Muriwaqa who were convicted for the unlawful possession of illicit drugs were each sentenced to 14 years imprisonment on the 29th of last month by Lautoka High Court Judge Justice Thushara Rajasinghe.
Both men were given a non‑parole period of 12 years.
The Petition of Appeal was filed in the Court of Appeal Registry yesterday on the grounds that the sentence of 12 years was manifestly lenient having regard to the facts and the circumstances of the case.
The two were found in possession of 49.9kg of cocaine in Vuda on the 13th of July last year.
The drugs were packed in 34 parcels wrapped with plastic wrappers and masking tape and were found inside a travelling bag and a suitcase.
