The Director of Public Prosecutions Christopher Pryde has filed an appeal on the sentence imposed on the 33-year-old man of Bua who was sentenced to 14‑years imprisonment for raping his 10-year-old stepdaughter and sewing up her genitals.
The 33‑year‑old man was convicted of three counts of rape and a count of act with intent to cause grievous harm to his 10‑year‑old step daughter in July this year.
The incidents occurred between 2013 and 2018 in Bua.
Pryde says they are appealing on the grounds that the sentence of 14 years was manifestly lenient having regard to the facts and the circumstances of the case.
High Court Judge Justice Daniel Goundar had delivered the 14-year prison sentence and had also fixed a non‑parole period of 12‑years.
The Petition of Appeal was filed in the Court of Appeal Registry yesterday.
